The Resilient by Design/Bay Area Challenge (2017-2018) was a collaborative design process showcasing innovative new ways to strengthen the Bay Area's resilience to sea level rise, flooding, severe storms and earthquakes.
The Resilient by Design process began with an open call to engineers, architects, designers, artists, dreamers, community members and students to create interdisciplinary teams to tackle the challenge of building resilience to climate change.
Nine teams studied nine sites and worked with local communities for six months to develop innovative design concepts and reports. At the conclusion, an expert jury considered each team’s emphasis on multi-stakeholder, multi-benefit problem solving strategies, feasibility of design, and focus on equitable and measurable community engagement.
While the Resilient by Design challenge is over, the work is not done. These nine concept designs have catalyzed further community engagement and project development towards a more resilient future. Several of the concepts have been advanced with further studies, local partnerships and even engineered designs. These include Colma Creek, the Great Bayway (Highway 37), San Rafael’s Canal District and the North Richmond shoreline.
