California’s Density Bonus Law aims to encourage the development of affordable housing by providing housing developers with certain incentives such as increasing density above the maximum allowed on the site by the local zoning, reductions in local parking standards, concessions to reduce project costs, and reductions or waivers of applicable development standards. Local agencies are responsible for implementing and obligated to implement the provisions of State Density Bonus Law. These resources are meant to help staff adhere to Density Bonus requirements. The Density Bonus Model Ordinance provides template language for jurisdictions to adopt and the Density Bonus Program Guidelines provide administrative guidance for implementation of the State Density Bonus Law and the local agency’s Density Bonus Ordinance.
