At this year’s General Assembly, Delegates reviewed and approved the ABAG Budget and Work Program and learned how our region’s local jurisdictions are working together to advance solutions to environmental challenges.

SB 272 Presentation, Panel Discussion & Keynote 12 to 2 p.m.

Resilience: Innovative Governance for Regional Challenges

Learn about regional issues that cannot be tackled solely by individual jurisdictions and the innovative ways local governments are collaborating on solutions to address environmental challenges. Panelists will discuss their respective projects and ongoing collaborations, followed by audience Q&A.

Keynote Speaker: Shalini Vajjhala

Shalini is the Executive Director of PRE Collective(link is external, opens in a new window) and a nationally recognized infrastructure and climate resilience expert with more than 15 years of experience designing, funding, and financing community-centered resilient infrastructure solutions. Over the last decade, she founded and led the design firm re:focus partners(link is external, opens in a new window) and co-founded The Atlas(link is external, opens in a new window), an online platform for local government collaboration and innovation. Previously, Shalini held multiple positions at the US EPA and the White House Council on Environmental Quality. She is currently a Board Member of Smart Growth America and a nonresident senior fellow with the Brookings Institution Metro Program. Shalini holds a B.Arch in Architecture and Ph.D. in Engineering and Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University.

SB 272 Presentation

Larry Goldzband, Executive Director of the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC)

BCDC’s Executive Director will provide an overview of how BCDC is implementing SB 272 (Laird, 2023), which requires all local governments within the Commission’s jurisdiction to develop rising sea level adaptation plans that must be approved by BCDC based on the guidelines it will promulgate in December of this year.
