Furniture that is tall and narrow such as free-standing shelving, racks, and bookcases can be especially hazardous in an earthquake for they can topple over, injuring you, your employees, or your customers. Fortunately there are simple steps that you can take to significantly reduce the risk of these pieces falling over. Cabinets and bookshelves along the wall should be bolted into the wall studs when possible.

The stability of freestanding shelving can be greatly increased by connecting the tops of cabinets facing each other with metal braces, thereby effectively broadening their narrowest dimension.

Freestanding shelving should also be securely connected to the floor.
